Known problems as of August release version 0.9.293
Bare-Metal installation image (.ISO) - NOTE
The .ISO installer image will install the Ubuntu 14.4.3 operating system as well as all of the software stack for VIRL. Due to space issues, the CSR1000v image is not included in the .ISO installation image. Once VIRL has been installed; your salt-key applied and communication established to the Cisco salt-masters, you will be able to install the CSR1000v 3.16 image from the VIRL Software panel in the User Workspace Management interface.
- Use a Web-browser to log into the User Workspace Management interface and select the 'VIRL Software' tab from the panel on the left. Select the CSR1000v and then press 'Start Installation'.
VIRL issues
When making system changes, the VM reported 'Internal Error' but then continues
- This is a known issue and is cosmetic in nature. Press 'continue' to remove the error message dialog.
When I install VIRL, and run the 'Install changes' procedure, I see an error message 'UnicodeDecodeError: 'utf8' codec can't decode'
- This is a cosmetic error and can be ignored.
My VIRL VM no longer responds to keyboard or mouse following reload
- Some users have reported issues with both VMWare Fusion and ESXi, where they are no longer able to use their mouse or keyboard on the VIRL VM. Adding the following lines to the .VMX file has been proven to be effective in SOME instances if the issue is encountered.
usb.generic.allowHID = "TRUE"
usb.generic.allowLastHID = "TRUE"I have installed VIRL on my ESXi server. When I try to start up a simulation, I loose connection to the VIRL server and the VIRL server is no longer responding
- Your ESXi server MUST be running the minimum patch level listed below in order to run.
ESXi 5.1 U2 (Build 1483097)
ESXi 5.5 U1 (Build 1623387)VMMaestro issues
What are these additional VM Node subtypes? vSRX, Vyatta?
- Users with access to a Juniper vSRX image, or Vyatta image, can load these into the VIRL VM via the User Workspace Management tool. You are then able to design a topology with these nodes. If you launch the simulation and you have the 3rd party VM image installed, the VM will spin up.
AutoNetKit visualization does not appear (WINDOWS)
- Please ensure that the setting in 'File/Preferences/General/Web Browser' - 'Use external web browser' is selected and external web-browser is set to a browser such as Chrome, Safari or Firefox - Internet Explorer/Edge browser are NOT supported.
AutoNetkit issues
I have a topology with NXOSv virtual devices. MPLS VPN configuration isn't being created!
- Auto-configuration of MPLS VPN PEs is not supported in current NXOSv image and therefore are blocked by ANK.
I have a topology with Titanium virtual devices. MPLS TE/RSVP configuration isn't being created!
- Auto-configuration of MPLS TE and RSVP is not supported in current Titanium image and therefore are blocked by ANK.
VIRL Core code issues
I have a new installation of VIRL - every simulation I try to start fails with 'No valid host'!
- If you have a fresh VIRL installation, make sure that you have mapped each one of the five network interfaces, even if you do not intend to use all of them. This is required for successful system operation. If you don't you may see instance like:

- Please check the installation instructions for proper mapping of interfaces
I have a topology where some VMs go ACTIVE and others go into ERROR state?
- Each VM that is configured in a topology is associated with a operating system image such as IOSv, IOSXRV etc. Each VM is also configured with a memory size value which is allocated when the VM is started up. For example, IOSv requests 512mb, CSR1000v requests 3072mb. When you request to start a topology, the VM management function (Openstack Grizzzly) will evaluate the VM start request and confirm if there is sufficient memory available to support the VM. If there is enough memory, the VM will boot-up and will be reported as 'ACTIVE'. If there is insufficient memory, the VM will be reported as being in 'ERROR' state. Since the requested as evaluated in the sequence in which the VM start requests were received, you may see the situation where some VMs in your topology start up, while others go into ERROR state. The order in which the start requests are made is unpredictable, so you may see node 1,2 & 3 start which 4,5, & 6 go into 'ERROR' but the next attempt results in nodes 1,3, & 5 going active while 2,4 & 6 go into 'ERROR'

Clik here to view.Configuration extraction fails on my VMs. Console log reports "Download of startup-updated config failed"
- There are a number of possible reasons for this to happen but the key is to ensure that the system can access the VMs. The system attempts to log in using a set of default usernames and passwords. For example, the assumption is that the IOSv enable password is set to 'cisco'. Therefore if you've changed the password, the configuration extraction process will fail! If you configure the VMs using Autonetkit, the basic configuration that is created will enable the configuration extraction to be performed successfully. If you don't use Autonetkit, bear in mind that that YOU will need to collect the configuration data yourself or you'll need to create the required password. NOTE - the 'enable' password only applies to VMs running the IOS operating system (IOS XR and NX-OS are not impacted by this).
